Canadia: 2056 – Season 3?

First, I’m sorry that I haven’t posted in a while… I’ve gotten really bad at keeping things up to date…
Second, we judged the “future graphics contest” today, and I was really flattered and blown away by the entries.

Now…

While I was at the CBC today, we talked about the possibility of a 3rd season… And we don’t know what to do…

I would love to do a 3rd season, not just because it’s a job, but because I have a great time putting this show together… It’s a great group of people, and I love the world that’s been created.

The success of a show like this is tough to gauge… There are listener numbers, but it doesn’t tell us a whole lot.

So, without sounding like I’m trying to solicit “fan mail” I’m putting this out there:

It wouldn’t hurt to write the CBC and ask for a 3rd season, if you want one… Even if it’s a simple: “I’m a fan of this show and I’d like a 3rd season please”.

Of course, you can be more enthusiastic if you like, I’m not going to dissuade you.

Here’s the address to send something to: canadia2056@cbc.ca

It’ll go to my producer, who will forward it to the powers that be.

This isn’t an attempt at starting a campaign, it’s just that we could all benefit from a better picture of how many people are actually listening.

I’ll post more about the last couple episodes as they air, and give out some boring details about my life… Soon.

Canadia: 2056 – Season 2

CBC actually pulled out some promotion, and I’m really happy. Here’s the official website, now in awesome 8-bit! There’s some cast and crew pics, video’s, bio’s and even a contest!

The first episode of the second season starts tonight on CBC Radio 1 at 11:05pm, then repeats on Friday at 11:30am.

I don’t know what people will think of the new season. Personally, I think it’s better than the first… But I have to say that… Even if it’s true.

Anyway.

And yes, as it was mentioned in the comments, I did win an ACTRA award for my work on the show. I am very grateful, and was somewhat shocked, actually… I took it as an acknowledgment, not just for my work, but for the entire cast’s – and for Radio Drama in general.

Here’s a picture of my dog staring at the award, looking just as stunned as I must have looked when they read my name.

WTF, you won?!

Sigh of Relief

It’s been a while. Let me see, what have I been doing…

I was working.

And I moved in January.

There, you’re all caught up.

I just finished writing the last episode of Canadia… Like five minutes ago. We still have 2 episodes left to record, but I’m done with the writing. Done.

It’s bittersweet for sure. I’m not exactly sure how I feel. A bit relieved, a bit sad… A bit… Tired. Actually, shit, really tired.

24 episodes in a year and a half. 10 the first season, 14 this season.

I hope people like this season (Which, incidentally, starts this Wednesday @11pm on CBC radio 1)…

Anyway, I’m going to bed. For a few days, I think. Then I’ll catch up on all the e-mails… taxes… life… That I’ve been neglecting for so long.

I had a hell of a time. Not many people get to do what I just did. I’ve been really lucky for this experience.

Ahh, feels nice…

Wait…

Oh… There’s this little… Twinge of something… In my gut… What is that…

oh.

What the hell am I going to do now?!?!

shit.

I’m unemployed.

Rainy Daze

Yeah, yeah, the title’s cliché, I know.

I’ve been surfing the net FOR HOURS and HOURS… Occasionally switching over to Word to write… nothing…

This is one of those days that just crawls by at first, but in a few hours I’ll wonder where the day went.

Anyway.

Canadia: 2056 now has an official web page, here. It’s in progress, there’s more to come (and it’ll be in super futuristic 8-bit!).

And, I can’t believe it, but the CD of the first season is available here for a whopping $49.99.

I like how part of the description reads:

This entertaining sci-fi comedy series is written by one of Canada’s best-loved comedy writers, Matt Watts.

Heh.

“best-loved”.

Do you hear that? My own CD says I’m (one of Canada’s) BEST-LOVED!

Kevin White, I’m coming after your job. Are you best-loved? I don’t think so… Maybe “somewhat” loved (or “most” loved), but quite frankly, when I watch Corner Gas, I think, “this show could use a PR-designated BEST-loved writer in charge”.

whee.

Goodbye 2007, Hello Forever

I realize it’s been a while since I posted. Don’t worry, I’m fine.

Seriously, I’m ok.

So, to address some e-mails and some family questions…

Canadia: 2056…

If you notice a complete lack of publicity surrounding a show – if you hear or read absolutely nothing at all about a particular program – the chances are that it’s premiering within a matter of days. It’s CBC Radio’s anti-publicity campaign, their “publicity-nouveau” if you will. If you think about it, it really challenges the listener to “discover” programming. It’s rather brilliant and progressive, actually.

“Our silence and lack of acknowledgment indicates that some thing is about to happen… Maybe.”

But, for the neophobes who can’t get on board with this whole “anti-publicity” fad, and for those who have duly noted that the CBC Program schedule says that Afghanada is still airing on the 2nd of January:

Canadia: 2056 starts airing on Wednesday. Yes, this Wednesday, January 2nd at 11:05PM, repeat on Friday January 4th at 11:30AM. The first season will run through until March, and then the second season (the episodes we’re currently writing/recording) will begin airing.

Also, for those of you enquiring about CD’s of the first season: I think it’s safe to assume at this point that they will not be available for Christmas. I’m assured that they will be available for pre-order by the time the show starts airing on Wednesday… But if you go by my convoluted logic regarding the publicity for the show – if you don’t order the CD’s at all, they will arrive on your doorstep sometime last week.

As for podcasting… Don’t even ask. It’s hopeless at this point. The idea of downloading any radio drama from the CBC website looks like it’ll probably happen around the time digital media is considered out-dated and archaic. Incidentally, I tried to get the phrase “now available on the compact disc format!” on the cover of the CD’s, but they didn’t go for it.

We’re halfway through recording the new season, which I’m really enjoying writing. Although the focus is primarily the characters and their relationships, we’re pushing the SF story-lines as far as we can… For the record, if you think I’ve stolen something from either Douglas Adams or Grant Naylor, it’s an homage…

Not theft.

(Fine, I “borrowed” some ideas… But at least I ADMIT IT!)

Everything else…

The non-SF screenplay I wrote will be getting some development money – So I’m working on a second draft of that.

I’ve got an outline for another film idea in the works, and I’m waiting to hear on a couple pitches…

I just played the first God of War, and it was awesome.

Anyway…

About a month ago I was getting some paperwork together, looking at my bank statement and I had a moment of realization. This was the first year where all my income came from writing… Not only that, but I actually earned my keep, never having to borrow a single dime.

Who knows what next year will be like… This year was the year I almost said “I am a writer” outloud. Mind you, I haven’t… Typing it now filled me with a sense of foreboding.

But there’s a small part of me that’s borderline proud.

And that’s something to marginally celebrate.

Happy 2008!
